Pre-Mix for Food Sensitivity Elimination Diet

Dogs can have food sensitivities that are difficult to figure out. Testing can be very expensive and not affordable for everyone.  As an alternative to expensive testing, you can try an elimination diet. Elimination diets consist of feeding very limited ingredients to see if your dog’s symptoms improve. Most elimination diets include a meat protein, which could be the cause of the reaction in the first place. Grandma Lucy’s Pre-Mix formulas can help determine a base set of ingredients that are suitable for your dog and allow you to easily change out meat proteins.

Pre-Mixes

Pre-Mixes are a blend of fruits, vegetables, vitamins, and minerals, without any meat protein. They are a 100% complete and balanced diet once meat protein is added by the pet parent. This makes them the perfect fit for an elimination diet, because meat protein sources can be controlled. The fruits and vegetables found in the Pre-Mix can be fed as treats during the trial period. Most dogs love blueberries, apples, bananas, and carrots, making these fruits excellent choices for treats. Thus, truly limiting the foods your dog is being exposed to as part of Grandma Lucy’s solution based feeding.

Protein

The two Pre-mixes that are best for this elimination period are the Pureformance Pre-Mix and the Macanna Pre-Mix. They provide a suitable amount of protein for a short period of time that comes from the chickpeas and pinto beans in their recipes. AAFCO, The Association of American Feed Control Officials, oversees pet food production and makes recommendations for dog’s health.  They suggest 18-26% protein on average for dogs and cats to maintain a healthy diet and both of these have 21% protein.

Food Elimination Trial

For two weeks, feed only the Pre-Mix as your dog’s daily diet and use only the fruits and vegetables found in the Pre-Mix as treats.  It is important to monitor your dog to see if the symptoms are improving, getting worse, or if new ones occur. If you see improvement your dog is tolerating the ingredients and on the road to recovery. Their immune system will continue to calm down and you will see a happier dog! At the end of two weeks add a single meat protein that your dog has not had a previous reaction to. Give this portion for another two weeks, to make sure it is tolerated well. If your dog is improving, you now have a diet comprised of some ingredients that are safe for him. If your dog’s symptoms get worse, or if new ones appear, please discontinue immediately. If at any time you feel your dog is in distress, please contact your veterinarian right away

Next Steps

The elimination diet has worked, and you now have a limited ingredient food your dog can eat without reactions! Feel free to try other proteins to determine more options. If there are any negative reactions, feed only the Pre-Mix again for two weeks and then continue as explained. Grandma Lucy’s solution based feeding, includes Pureformance and Macanna formulas with the meat already added for extra convenience for pet parents.
