Meet Story: Firefly Meadow’s Comfort Canine with a Heart of Gold(en)

At Firefly Meadow Service Dogs Inc., every dog has a purpose—and a personality to match. But one very special Golden Retriever has taken on the title of ambassador with grace, wiggles, and a whole lot of heart. Meet Story, our two-year-old Comfort Canine, future mama, and full-time ray of sunshine.

A Heart Full of Purpose

Story is more than just a pretty face (though those soulful eyes and velvety ears certainly don't hurt). As a trained Comfort Canine, her mission is simple but powerful: to help people feel safe, seen, and soothed. Whether she’s visiting individuals in therapeutic sessions, lending her gentle presence during difficult moments, or just being her joyful self at community events, Story brings calm and connection wherever she goes.

Her disposition? Pure gold. She’s the kind of dog that melts stress with a single tail wag. Sensitive, affectionate, and deeply intuitive, Story seems to know exactly when someone needs a nuzzle or a soft head on their lap. Her love is unconditional—and she gives it freely.

One of Story’s favorite places to work is in local schools, where she shines as a calm and encouraging presence for children. She listens patiently while young readers practice their skills, often lying beside them with her head on their feet, as if to say, “You’ve got this.” In occupational therapy sessions, she supports children as they work on coordination, strength, or sensory regulation—offering a comforting focus and gentle motivation. And when big feelings come up, Story is right there to help kids self-regulate, providing warmth and grounding with her quiet, steady companionship. For many students, her presence turns a challenging day into one filled with courage and connection.

Training with Tail Wags

Story has undergone extensive training to become the well-mannered, emotionally intelligent companion she is today. From basic obedience to advanced comfort work, she’s passed every milestone with enthusiasm (and the occasional zoomie).

One of our favorite training moments happened during a mock public access test at a local mall. Story stopped in front of a giant mirror, tilted her head, then walked slowly up to it and gave the reflection a long, serious sniff—clearly trying to figure out what kind of imposter Golden was staring back at her. After a few sniffs and a very suspicious side-eye, she decided Mirror Dog was harmless, but definitely weird.

Then there was the time we were training downtown and happened upon a horse and buggy trotting down the road. Story stopped in her tracks, ears high, tail frozen. You could practically hear her thinking, “What kind of dog is THAT?” She inched forward, gave a low huff, then leaned against her handler for reassurance—clearly unsure about this enormous, wheeled beast. (Don’t worry, the horse didn’t take it personally.)

Future Mama, Present Angel

Story is not only an ambassador for Firefly Meadow’s mission—she’s also part of our future. As a future breeding female, she’ll help bring more incredible service dogs into the world. With her intelligence, temperament, and gentle nature, her puppies will no doubt follow in her paw-steps, spreading comfort and joy wherever they go.

The Cat, the Cuddles, and the Water

When she’s not working or training, Story can usually be found doing two of her favorite things: swimming and snuggling with her best friend—Howard, the facility cat. Yes, you read that right. Our golden girl and our dignified feline roommate are practically inseparable. After a long day, they curl up together like a yin-yang of fur and whiskers. We’re convinced Howard thinks he’s part dog, and Story’s just fine with that.

And if there’s water nearby? Don’t even try to keep her out. Puddles, ponds, bathtubs—you name it, she’s in it. Her joy in the water is infectious, often turning staff outings into splashy playdates.

A Story Worth Sharing

If you’ve fallen for her charm already, you’re not alone. Story is even featured in the children’s book A Story to Share by Firefly Meadow’s founder, Chelsea Patenaude. The book beautifully captures the magic of what comfort dogs like Story bring to the world—and reminds us that healing can come in the form of a wagging tail and an open heart.

At Firefly Meadow Service Dogs Inc., Story represents everything we strive for: empathy, connection, joy, and healing. She’s helping us write a better story for the individuals and families we serve—one comforting paw at a time.

Whether she’s cuddling with Howard, comforting a client, or cautiously side-eyeing a horse-drawn carriage, Story reminds us that sometimes, love really does have four legs and fur.

Fueled by Love (and Fish!)

Of course, a dog as active and hardworking as Story needs top-tier nutrition—and she gets just that thanks to our wonderful partnership with Grandma Lucy’s. Story loves their 3 Bears recipes, especially the fish formula. Mealtime is her favorite time of day (second only to cuddle time). We’re proud to have Grandma Lucy’s sponsoring five of our Firefly Meadow dogs, ensuring they’re all fueled with healthy, wholesome ingredients as they grow, learn, and serve.

Good food. Good friends. Good work. Story is living her best life—and sharing that goodness with everyone she meets.
