Meet Bonnie: The Canine Reading Buddy Changing the Way Kids Learn to Love Books
Learning to read is such a rewarding journey, but for many kids, it can also be a real challenge. Research shows that children who struggle to read by third grade often find it hard to catch up with their peers later on. Sadly, more than one in five elementary school students are reading below their grade level.
But here's the good news: reading out loud has been shown to be a powerful tool for building vocabulary, improving fluency, and strengthening comprehension skills. Unfortunately, having to read out loud can fill kids with anxiety. Just think back to when you were a kid, and that feeling of being called on to read out loud in the classroom. The stress of reading aloud can often inhibit kids from trying in the first place.
That’s where reading dogs can help. Canine reading buddies provide kids with a comforting, non-judgmental presence that makes reading feel less like a chore and more like fun! These furry friends help reduce anxiety, build confidence, and make kids feel safe in the classroom as they practice reading. Just imagine—one hand holding a book, the other resting on a soft, loving pup. It’s a win-win!
But who are these amazing dogs that make such a big difference? Let’s introduce you to one very special dog, Bonnie, a reading dog who’s been helping kids thrive in her owners’ schools from pre-K through high school. Here’s is Bonnie’s story, as told by her owner, Sierra. Grandma Lucy’s is proud to sponsor Bonnie through our 501(c)(3), Project Pet RAK, our non-profit charity on a mission to support service and therapy dogs, and pets in need.
Bonnie’s story is one of resilience and new beginnings – the story of a reading dog:
This is my dog Bonnie, isn’t she cute?
My name is Sierra, and I have taught pre-K through 6th grade. In the of all of the years I have been teaching, one of the things I have enjoyed most is helping students learn how to read. I’m delighted to have Bonnie as a four-legged teaching assistant to help readers of all levels. But Bonnie wasn’t always the dedicated partner she is today.

After spending years in foster care, in less-than-ideal homes, Bonnie finally found herself with a veteran who was training her as a dog for emotional support, to assist with his PTSD. Unfortunately, his journey came to a close, leaving Bonnie with an uncertain future.

But Bonnie wasn’t ready to give up. We decided to rewrite her story, giving her a chance to live out her full potential.
As teachers, my husband and I recognized Bonnie’s gentle nature and saw an opportunity to connect her with students in the classroom. Bonnie soon became a beloved reading dog, participating in various community events. Whether it’s helping students in honor society programs or offering comfort to school aged students during stressful times, Bonnie has made a significant impact as a therapy dog in the classroom.

Bonnie is trained to be in calm and neutral position as she lies and listens to readers. Some might mistake her stillness for boredom, but the kids find it comforting and appreciate her steady presence.

Since we adopted Bonnie, she has embraced her life as a mountain girl. Outside of her reading education assistance dog work, she loves to hike and camp, fully enjoying the great outdoors. She also loves celebrating her birthday, which is a big celebration by the way!

Our journey with Bonnie also led us to discover Grandma Lucy’s dog food. After trying a bag from our local pet food store Earthwise COS and loving it, we couldn’t stop raving about it. To our delight, Grandma Lucy’s Instagram team reached out, and we became ambassadors. From there, the partnership blossomed, and the rest, as they say, is history.
We believe Bonnie’s story is a testament to the power of second chances and the incredible impact a dog can have on a community.
